EXPERIENCE

I did all my training in Orthopaedic Surgery in the UK, including the 6-month appointments of Thoracic Surgery and Neurosurgery in order to comply with the Greek Orthopaedic exam requirements. I gained experience in various aspects of the specialty both elective and trauma, as can be seen from the list above. By the time I left the UK I was familiar with a big number procedures, like: Knee Arthroscopies, Joint Replacements, Foot Surgery, Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Various Hand Operations, both Adult and Paediatric Trauma (Internal and External Fixation, Intramedulary Nailing, Hemiartroplasties, Tendon Repairs etc). I am also familiar with the various aspects of Paediatric Orthopaedics, both conservative and operative, which I developed further during my current practice.

CURRENT PRACTICE

Since June 1996 I have returned back to Corfu, Greece. I have my Practice where I see my patients and the work varies: Simple consultations, intrarticular injections, manipulations of simple fractures, minor operations etc. Since I trained in Paediatric Orthopaedics I get the majority of referrals from Paediatricians to see children with various problems, from simple ones, like flat feet, to more complicated like club foot, scoliosis, developmental hip dysplasia etc. From the year 2000, I developed the Neonatal Hip Ultrasound Service, where I see and scan a lot of newborns, either as routine hip check or whenever there is an indication for scanning (as family history, clinical suspicion etc). Since the introduction of hip ultrasound I very rarely see cases of severe or late presentation of hip dysplasia.

Meanwhile I have expanded the use of ultrasound to various aspects in Orthopaedics and I use it almost as a part of the clinical examination: Shoulder ultrasound (mainly for rotator cuff pathology including dynamic testing), Hip examination for synovitis, Haematomas, Muscle ruptures or strains, Cysts, Ganglia, Lipomas, Knees for patellar tendon and collateral ligaments, Achilles tendon for rupture (and treatment follow-up) and tendinopathies, Intrarticular and other injections with ultrasound control etc. This is a fast developing field and I will be attending more courses in the future and at present I am organising a teaching session and workshop in Athens.

I am also involved in the Corfu General Clinic, a small Private Hospital in Corfu with all main Specialties. I am a member of the Executive Board and the second in command Orthopaedic Surgeon. My work there involves both Elective and Trauma. During the summer season the workload is increased with the tourists. There is variety of surgical procedures like internal fixation of fractures (hip, femur, tibia, ankle, elbow, humerus, wrist, hand),hemiarthroplasties, tendon repairs, soft tissue trauma. I also look after head injuries, occasional multiple injuries including chest and spine. Heavy trauma we tend to refer to bigger Hospitals. There are MRI and CT scan facilities on the island. Future plans involve the development of Arthroscopy and Joint Arthroplasty service.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

During my time in the UK, I was involved with teaching medical students and postgraduate trainees and took part in various postgraduate programs in the Specialty mainly in Oxford and in the Glasgow region.

In Greece I was involved in teaching students for the local Open University (regarding Orthopaedic aspects) and for the academic years of 2002 - 2003 and 2003 - 2004, I worked part time as the Medical Officer at the Corfu School of Tourism Education. I had the duties of a General Practitioner and also I had to teach, for a few hours a week, about food hygiene, quality controls, first aid etc.

My name is also on the list of the University of Leicester for teaching undergraduates (for the Elective period) and during March – April 2005, I had my first Medical Student in Corfu.
